What is a 501(c)(3) organization?
The 501(c)(3) status is for charitable, educational and
religious
organizations. Charitable organizations
eligible for status are defined
as those organized and
operated for purposes beneficial to the public
interest.
United Way of America and
member United
Way organizations are
501(c)(3)
organizations. The agencies they fund are
either 501(c)(3) organizations or other 501(c) exempt
organizations recognized as being charitable or having a "public purpose." This
status is a central criterion that United
Way organizations use in
evaluating agencies that are seeking support. United Way also requires the
funded agencies to demonstrate fiscal responsibility, the appropriate use of
funds and proper accounting standards. Agencies must be non-discriminatory and
serve a purpose consistent with the public interest.
